I Have A New Role Model

17 Sep

There are a few women in my life that I seriously admire and consider role models – my grandmothers, my mum, my sister and a couple of friends who are constantly an inspiration to me. But recently I’ve added a famous face into the fold. I’m not usually one to find myself inspired by famous women (apart from maybe fashion-wise) and never before have I called one a role model. But a role model she has become. “Who is it?” you ask?

Yep. Christina Hendricks. That’s who. Now some of you might be thinking ‘Oh, well you’re just jumping on the Mad Men/Curvy Women bandwagon and you just like her because she’s famous and easy to idolise.’ For starters, I haven’t actually watched Mad Men apart from a couple of episodes when it was first broadcast here in the UK. As I don’t have a TV and not too much spare cash, I’ve missed it (although I will be purchasing Season 1 & 2 on DVD as soon as I get paid and catching up with the rest of the world). Secondly, I AM the Curvy Women bandwagon! Haha! By this I mean I’m not the woman who started the skinny vs. curvy debate and I don’t often take part in discussions about it, apart from to say that each woman is entitled to look like whoever she wants be it big and curvy or small and skinny. As long as she’s healthy, that’s all we should worry about! I myself am a woman with curves. And after Ms. Hendricks recent press heavy Emmy appearance (due to her lovely, big, womanly breasts) it became apparent that we are of a number of similar proportions.

This was the dress and those are the breasts that shot her into a new stratosphere. But what people maybe didn’t realise is that parts of the dress had to be customised to fit her measurements and that no other designers even offered to dress her for the event! How does this happen for an actress who has fast become one of the most popular characters in recent TV history?

So why is she my role model? Here we have a woman that isn’t afraid to flaunt what her mamma gave her! A woman who will admit that she wants to lose 10 pounds, like every other woman in this world. A woman who will admit that she does look beautiful in the occasional picture (we all have to admit it, even if it takes years, that not ALL the pictures taken of us are awful!).

Personally, I think it’s a shame that we the public and the press have made so much of Christina Hendricks’ body. She’s an actress and, like any person in any profession, should be noted for her acting skills. I personally think she was good in Firefly as Saffron and from what I hear, she’s good in Mad Men too. But her body has shot her into a whole new level of consciousness in society and has opened up a whole new series of debates about body image that have been bubbling under the surface for a long time.

I don’t want to be an actress nor do I want to be particularly famous. But if I did, I have women like Christina Hendricks to thank for creating a whole heap of new opportunities. And she’s also made a lot of men and fellow curvy women realise that, actually, us curvy girls are and can be DAMN FUCKING SEXY!

Christina Hendricks, I salute you as my newest role model. Thank you for being amazing!

(Oh and did you guys realise that she knits too? She is a true Crafty Fox!!)

Mooses and Autumn and Plaid…Oh My!

12 Sep

So a bit of a random blog title but after a wedding reception I went to recently, I have mooses on the brain (the couple are known as The Mooses to friends and the tables were moose themed!)! And it’s finally turning into Autumn now. The chill is in the air, the leaves are turning gold and red and yellow and the days are getting shorter again. And there is an abundance of plaid, mustard, burgundy, navy, grey and deep purple around again. A sure sign the Autumn fashions are taking over!

Here are a few of my favourite finds…(some of the moose finds may not be specifically mooses – they’re not easy to find and people mark things as moose when in fact they are deer, elk, etc, so forgive but enjoy all the same!)

Nomadic Elk Knitting Project Bags from KnitterBag on Etsy

Bronze Whitetail Deer Antler Necklace from Moon Raven Designs on Etsy

Secondhand Caribou Metal Tray from backgarage on Etsy

Vintage ‘Caramel Latte Secretary Dress’ from Red Velvet Art

Vintage Inspired Men’s Plaid Flannel Shirt by beesquaredb on Etsy

‘Emmalou’ Original Pastel Drawing from Red Velvet Art

Fox Scarf from Donna Wilson

Hansel from Basel Thigh High Socks from Urban Outfitters

Staring At Stars Russian Rose Embroidered Dress from Urban Outfitters

So there you have it…a few of my favourites from the web so far. There’ll be a few more posts like this coming over the next few months. Autumn is my favourite season. I love hats and scarves and jumpers and all the colours that come out during this month. It’s just beautiful.

Have a great week!

Hey!

31 Aug

As you may have noticed, my posting here has been pretty sporadic lately. I’ve been dealing with some personal issues and have recently started a new job as a classroom assistant, which is challenging but enjoyable! It’s giving me new challenges to face each day I’m at work and I know I’m not going to have to deal with repetitive tasks (apart from maybe lesson plans) day in day out. Teaching is something I’ve had an interest in for a long time and I’ve recently made the decision to apply for a PGCE to teach Media Studies to 14-19 year olds! I’m currently in the process of writing out my personal statement and wondering how I can get it down to 47 lines!! Haha. I’ll get there eventually….

I’ve also been busy with my crafty escapades, some of which I’m still planning and some of which are soon-to-be-announced-but-currently-secret-squirrel-business. The only thing I can share is that it is a collaboration with an amazing lady – see if you can guess who it is (although I won’t tell until we decide to go public and you won’t win any prizes, sorry! Haha).

I’ve still been trying to keep up-to-date with all the blogs though and have seen some serious inspiration lately. It’s one thing I love about the blogging community…you’re never far away from something to brighten your day, make you look at things in a new light or spark a really good idea!! A few of my favourite pictures found either via blogs or flickr from the past few weeks…

(By the way, if anyone feels like being generous and buying me this necklace I’ll love you forever and a day! Well, I have to be a little cheeky here, haha! And it’s only $57.50 including shipping to the UK!)

I’ve also been spending quite a bit of time with friends old and new. It’s been great getting out of the house on nice days and wandering around various parts of London, searching for places and objects and coming across random jumble sales and things that would look great in my room/house!

Autumn is almost here too and I’m so in the mood for jumpers and woolly knit hats. And toffee nut lattes. We don’t get pumpkin spice over here which I’m a bit bummed out about but hopefully I’ll get to taste it one day! I’ll be back again soon with more of my alphabet and more posts about what I’m up to! I’ve missed you all and thanks for continuing to visit The Crafty Foxes!

I’m Coming Back Soon

22 Aug

fox family XO.

Life sometimes gets in the way of everything else you want to keep doing. Blogging has been one of the affected areas and I apologise to you all. I hope you’ve been keeping up with all the other blogs out there though – I know I have!

This long break has been needed though and I’ve been able to regroup and regain my creativity again. It’s time to come back again. See you soon!

G is for Good

17 Jul

Good is a word that I don’t like to overuse as I find that after a while it loses it’s meaning but recently (aside from the odd bad day we are all entitled too) things in my life have been good. Not great. Not awful. Just good. It’s been a long time coming so I’m happy with things just going good. For this post, I’ve decided to list all the good things in my life, so I hope you enjoy and can celebrate a few things with me and maybe inspire you to see that good is fine. Good is good!

1) I’ve been making more friends within the crafty community (thank you BUST Craftacular London and The Last Wednesday Knitting Club!) It’s taken me a long time to even feel confident enough to talk to people I admire but once I mustered up the nerve contacts and friendships have occurred. One of the best things about this is that as a new starter in business I now have a nice group of people that I know I can email or call if need be to ask them a question.

2) My products are now available for sale in a retail shop!! Yes, you heard. I have an official stockist in an official real life shop you can walk into and everything!! Haha. I dropped the finished products off today, so as of Monday (I think) you will be able to buy Crafty Foxes handmade accessories at The Shop @ Discover Greenwich. It’s such an exciting thing for me and is part of the reason why I’ve been so absent from here lately. I wanted to put my all into this first order to make sure it was up to standard. I’m at a wee bit of a loss now that I don’t have 20 brooches to hand sew in 3 hours, haha!! From now on though I have the knowledge I need to get me through subsequent orders and re-orders that I can work better and more efficiently.

3) I’m planning a mini craft fair for the end of August. This is as much as I can reveal right now. More information will be here next week! It’s another exciting phase of the Crafty Foxes story!!

4) I have finally been offered a teaching assistant job. It’s 16-24 year olds which scares me a little bit but I’m really looking forward to it. It’s 25 hours a week for 6 months and adds a bit more routine to my life which has been more than a little bit chaotic in the last 6 months. I can’t wait to start and I’ll let you know how my first week goes when it’s done. Hopefully after the initial 6 months is up I’ll be kept on!

5) I had a really good day with my parents today. I haven’t really spent time with both of them for a while so it was nice to be able to. I miss them and don’t visit half as much as I should but they do come to London quite a bit so I’m lucky in that respect. We had a pub lunch that was memorable to say the least (“I’m not stoned anymore!”) but it was nice just to catch up and know that my parents are proud of the hard work I’ve been putting into my business and my products and support me every step of the way.

I hope you, my lovely blog readers, are well and I’ll elaborate on more things over this coming week (craft fair and other exciting announcements). It’s been great seeing that people are still reading during my absence and that my blog is attracting new readers all the time too! Hello and love to you all! I hope you’re having a good weekend!

E is for Experience

16 Jun

‘E’ was a difficult letter to come up with something for, seeing as I have posts lined up for most of the other letters in the alphabet! A true toughie that eventually led me to the one thing that ultimately defines a person’s life and allows them to offer advice and words of wisdom to others.

Experience.

-the knowledge or skill acquired by such means over a period of time, an event or occurrence that leaves an impression on someone, encounter or undergo

I can relate to all of these meanings of the word and the many experiences in my life so far have made me the person I am today. I have travelled, made numerous mistakes and wrong decisions and had numerous achievements and made right decisions. I have had a variety of jobs, I have too many hobbies and I have/had friends and lovers from all walks of life. All of these have made up my experiences in my life thus far and I know that I have many more to come, some of which will be good and some of which will be bad. But they will ultimately make me a better and stronger woman!

(all images from weheartit.com, using keyword “experience”)

(And this one below, just for fun as it made me laugh and realise that it’s little experiences like seeing pictures like this that usually get us through the day!!)
